You Are Not Normal
It’s a week to go until Election Day and you’re trailing in the polls. Over the past month, your campaign has fizzled as your opponent’s sizzled. Money is lost, your reputation has suffered, your dream of holding elected office is up in smoke. You ask yourself, how did this happen? I did what I was supposed to do. I sent out a hundred press releases. I held press conferences. I spent thousands of dollars on television and radio spots. Why isn’t my message connecting with voters? Why, why, why?
Every cycle, thousands of candidates are left second-guessing themselves on election night, questioning where exactly everything went wrong.
Not surprisingly, the problem often lies with the candidates themselves, or more specifically, the candidate’s refusal to acknowledge one simple fact of life: YOU ARE NOT NORMAL.
It’s the cardinal rule of public relations. Connecting with an audience requires an ability to step outside the box – to forget all that you know – and consider the mindset of your audience. The average consumer or constituent isn’t privy to inside information, private conversations or policy nuances. In fact, the knowledge of the average voter rarely goes beyond what they read in the local papers, hear on the radio, or catch in passing during a commercial break.
Audiences have their own biases and lenses through which they view the world. To win, a candidate must make an emotional connection. That requires the ability to speak with voters in their own language.
